Dr. Maryanna Klatt, Ph. D.

The Ohio State University, College of Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine

Maryanna Klatt, Ph.D. is the Director for the Center for Integrative Health and a Professor in the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Her focus is the exploration of evidence-based Integrative Medicine. Dr. Klatt has been trained in Mindfulness Meditation, an approach that comes out of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, in addition to being a certified Integrative Yoga Therapy instructor. She combines yoga and mindfulness meditation, and diaphragmatic breathing in her practice, teaching, and research.  Specifically, her research has shown that nurses working in a surgical intensive care unit reduced their stress by 40% (shown in their salivary amylase), university/hospital faculty and staff slept better, and bank employees significantly reduced their perceived stress, cancer survivors and their caregivers became significantly more resilient, while inner-city 3rd graders significantly improved in hyperactivity and cognitive inattention- behaviors often related to stress. Her goal is to reduce health care costs via preventative stress reduction worksite programming. She has shown that mindful awareness interventions produce an average of 4000.00 annual cost savings for participants up to 5 years post-intervention. Dr. Klatt has published several articles and book chapters, given a TED talk, and presented her work at national and international scientific conferences. Her stress reduction program has been a fully covered benefit for faculty and staff at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Klatt believes that there is an unexplored mine of low-cost, high-yield movement and meditation practices that have broad pragmatic value. Her research-based program has reached 700+ adults in need of stress reduction, demonstrating the real-world impact of translational research. Her goal is to expose people to yoga, meditation, and breathing techniques that can be utilized during the day, helping them achieve the life and balance they desire.

After getting her MS and PhD in nutrition, metabolism and exercise, she developed and used a wide array of assessment procedures in those domains for the OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) and managed the Bionutrition Core. She advised researchers in their study design and use of these methods for over 16 years. She has been a dietitian for 21 years and involved in translating health and research information to the every-day patient through research studies, consults and volunteer work at free clinics for the underserved. She currently serves on several non- or not-for-profit boards/committees in the Columbus community.

In 2013, she took on and continued to teach graduate, undergraduate and medical students about nutrition assessment and diet. In her role as associate director of education for the OSU Center of Integrative Medicine, she is helping the team of integrative clinicians to develop and implement the educational curricula for training healthcare professionals in many facets of integrative health. She is working with OSUWMC to integrate these therapies into the acute care setting.
